Physical Education and Sport
Physical Education
Physical Education and Sport are a highly valued element of our school life at St. Theresa's, going beyond the curriculum expectations. We recognise the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles, and encourage a positive attittude towards being active whilst pupils are with us and in their futures.

2 hours weekly are dedicated towards PE lessons; the first being a taught lesson taken from the Primary PE Planning, and the second lesson being skills based. These weekly fundamental 'skill' lessons are a recent addition to our curriculum, as we recognised that our pupils require repeated practise of key skills in order to enhance progression and confidence in different PE areas. Fundamental skills areas we focus are are tailored to an individual classes needs but will be one of the following:
-
Throwing and Catching
-
Balance and Coordination
-
Running / Stamina
-
Fitness
Outdoor and adventurous activity is provided through orienteering on the school grounds, B4W trips and activities and residential visits. Swimming takes place in Y4, in line with National Curriculum expectations.
Our Golden Threads are areas of PE that provide the backbone for our lessons and consist of the following:
Our Big Ideas feature repeatedly across lessons, and are skills and awareness that our pupils build on in order to progress wholly as a sports person. They include:
- Motor Competence
- Rules, Strategies and Tactics
- Healthy Participation
- Teamwork
- Evaluation
Sports
We work alongside LINKs School Sports Partnership and Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS) who support us in curriculum enhancements, sports clubs and competitions. It is out ambition that all pupils have the opportunity to represent our school in competitive sports at least once a year.
We run several afterschool and lunch time sports clubs, targetted at different age groups. These are subject to change across the terms, but currently include:
- Cheerleading
- Gaelic Football
- Football
- Netball
- Dodgeball
- Basketball
During the Summer Term, we hold Fitness Fortnight. During this time, we engage with a range of different agencies in order to provide opportunities for our pupils to engage with sports and activities that they otherwise may not have the chance to. We view Fitness Fortnight as a celebration of active and healthy lifestyles, and it is an annual event that we all look forward to!
