At St Theresa’s we have adopted a small-step, mastery approach to maths which focuses on our pupils securing a deep understanding before moving on to a different unit. We prioritise depth over breadth, and recognise the importance of constant exposure to calculations and number sense.

We have daily maths lessons as well as utilising real life opportunities to use maths.  We make use of our outdoor spaces and playground markings to help make maths come to life.  We follow the SSELP calculation policy so that there are consistent approaches, supporting our pupils as they move on to secondary school.  Please visit the Policies and Documents section of this page for more details about this.

We use a blend of different resources to support our learners but primarily use White Rose as the basis of our teaching.

In addition to daily maths lessons, we practise calculation skills during ‘Morning Maths’ and weekly arithmetic tests. In doing this, the following core principles underpin our maths curriculum:

  • Arithmetic
  • Small Steps
  • Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving
  • Collaborative Learning
  • Number Focus
  • Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract Resources

To further support our pupils we provide access to Mathletics which is also encouraged for use at home.

Learning Multiplication facts is a key skill.  All pupils in Year 4 are assessed on their knowledge. To enhance their multiplication knowledge and confidence, we provide them with access to TTRockstars in Y4 for school and home use.
