Modern Foreign Languages

Following consultation with the pupils and parents and looking at the themes that run through the curriculum, we have decided that Key Stage 2 will learn Spanish.

Our school's curriculum intent states that ‘through wide and varied exposure to different genres, cultures and traditions, our children will develop a rich and deep understanding of the world’. We believe that through learning a language, pupils will gain a broader understanding of the world and different cultures. This also supports our Catholic Social Teaching principles of 'Human Dignity' and 'Solidarity'.

We follow a scheme from Language Angels which is align with the National Curriculum. Units are built around three pillars (our Golden Threads):

  • vocabulary
  • grammar
  • phonics

Within lessons, pupils encouter disciplinary language skills that we refer to as ‘Big Ideas’:

  • listening
  •  speaking
  • reading
  • writing
  •  grammar
