Music

Being a Catholic school, music is an integral part of our Catholic life as we use it to celebrate, worship and in prayer. Through assemblies, masses and liturgies, our pupils are encouraged to collaboratively use their voices to express themselves. Our long-established Easter and Christmas performances allow us all to practise and share music with our wider school community.

We follow the National Curriculum programme of study. We use the online scheme ‘Charanga’, and are supported in our teaching and learning by Sheffield Music Hub. In doing so, we help enable our children to understand musical concepts through a repetition-based approach to learning.

Our Golden Threads are woven throughout our whole-school music curriculum and focus on the following interrelated dimensions of music:

  • Pulse
  • Rhythm
  • Pitch
  • Tempo
  • Dynamics
  • Timbre
  • Texture
  • Structure
  • Notation

Our disciplinary skills (Big Ideas) are repeatedly visited throughout Charanga units, allowing pupils to build on prior knowledge:

  • Listening and Appraising
  • Musical Activities - Games
  • Musical Activities - Singing
  • Musical Activities - Playing Instruments
  • Improvisation
  • Composition
  • Performance

In Y5, Sheffield Music Hub provides all pupils with a weekly 1 hour cornet lesson, which is celebrated in a whole school end of year performance.
